Why do we age rapidly after 40?
I follow chiropractor, Dr. Sten Eckberg, on YouTube. He has a thorough teaching style that I appreciate. In one of his video, he posited the question: "What do we age rapidly after 40?" And, why does this question resonate so much right now?!?
It's definitely that season of life for me and my peers, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. I have these conversations several times a week, and we are just not feeling our best. When asked when was the last time you remembered feeling good - full of energy, able to do your life without aches and pains, brain fog, etc. The most common answer I hear is, "about 10 years ago."
Why are we walking around feeling crummy for 10 years without the help we need to feel better? I believe the answer is, we've been following conventional advice, and it has not kept up with the massive changes in the last 30 years in our food system, technology - hello, handheld devices, and what that means for our stress levels. We are soaking in stressors almost every moment of the day, but we have not been taught that proactively de-stressing is just as important as diet and exercise.
Dr. Eckberg used the analogy of a car. He said, "Our bodies are like a machine or a car. We know that a car needs regular maintenance to run well and to extend the life of the vehicle." Dr. Eckberg concluded that "our bodies are the same."
The maintenance entailed in keeping our bodies from breaking down, is not just eating well, or fueling properly, or movement, or sleep, or proactively de-stressing - removing harmful substances from our food, home, work environment, and personal care products.
It is ALL of it. The body doesn't get the signals it needs to repair.
It's a lot, and there is so much conflicting advice out there, which is why I started this newsletter. I'm hoping that I can sift through the noise, and save the time of going down the rabbit holes, to distill that information into these "Bite-Sized Insights." It's also why I pursued two health coaching certifications in the last year and a half. It's because the advice out there is not one-size-fits-all.
Each one of us is biochemically unique, or bio-individual. Just like we all look different on the outside, we look different on the inside too - at the cellular, chemical (think hormones and neurotransmitters), the structural organ, and the emotional levels. They are all interconnected.
We each need to find what works for us individually. For my private clients, that includes testing, so we can stop guessing. What if you are eating super healthy, and are unwittingly eating foods every day that you have a food sensitivity to, like I was? That was keeping my body inflamed, tired, contributed to brain fog, and leaky gut. I would have never know to avoid those health foods - vegetables, spices, and tea - without having done the food sensitivity testing. This is just one example of what could be contributing to the rapid aging after age 40.
Let's get out in front of that, and stop it. If you're interested in discussing, apply for a call here.
